High precision die bonding and optical component alignment for automatedproduction of Hybrid Optoelectronic Components
Hybrid module manufacturers demand packaging systems with a high degree of system integration, while maintaining full process automation at maximum throughput and yield. The ficonTEC AL2000 is designed for full automated assembly of Hybrid Optical Systems (HOS) for the FTTx market and other optoelectronic applications.
The fully automated packaging process of e.g. diplexers and triplexers, involves pick & place of several components like photo-diode, lasers, integrated optical chip, and PCB. Various assembly steps are combined in one machine concept for assembling and qualifying complex hybrid modules. Whereby some components are placed passively supported by vision inspection, others are aligned actively by closing a control loop on nano-scale precision. The system utilizes adhesive bonding for fixation of the components. Additionally, the fully automated assembly system relies on special hardware designs i.e. for trays, chucks, motion concepts, and calibration systems as well as software features like data base interfaces, recipe controlled processes and a flexible process editor.
Tool calibration is important for any automated system. Calibration of tooling was introduced already during machine concept definition and therefore it provides fully automated tool calibration for each pickup tool, tray position, dispenser device, test unit, and the assembly unit. Sensors are specifically
installed to measure all necessary parameters.
The ficonTEC AL2000 is assigned for production use hence the hardware is selected to operate 24 hours at 7 days a week, to perform single component performance verification to ensure high package yield, to make use of error handling routines to stabilize the process, and to imply the recipe controlled software for transparent production.
To assemble the hybrid optical system automatically, the process program is created on the PlaceControl Machine Software. This software is recipe controlled and connected to an open SQL database. Information about component lots, process parameters, and test results are logged and can be retrieved for process optimization purposes even from any office computer connected to the network.
